The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is facing a wave of high-profile defeats in the 2024 parliamentary elections, with several prominent Members of Parliament (MPs) losing their seats to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
These unexpected results are significantly reshaping the political landscape, leaving only a few NPP MPs holding on to their positions.
Among the biggest casualties is KT Hammond, the long-serving MP for Adansi Asokwa, who was defeated by the NDC’s Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani. Dorani won with 14,229 votes, while Hammond secured 13,275.
Other notable figures who faced setbacks include Dakoa Newman (Okaikwei South) and Ursula Owusu-Ekuful (Ablekuma West). Owusu-Ekuful managed only 26,575 votes, while NDC’s Rev Kweku Addo won the Ablekuma West seat with 31,866 votes.
In Ayawaso Central, Henry Quartey was ousted by Abdul Rauf Tongym Tubazu of the NDC, who garnered 29,755 votes compared to Quartey’s 23,345. Sylvester Tetteh of Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro also lost to NDC’s Okle Felix Akwetey, who won with 37,473 votes, leaving Tetteh with 27,888 votes.
In a particularly tight race, Twum Barima of Dormaa East narrowly lost to NDC’s Rachel Owusuaa, who won with 12,310 votes against Barima’s 12,050.
These results point to a growing NDC momentum, leaving the NPP with much to reconsider as they face an evolving political landscape.
The party is now under pressure to reassess its strategies in response to the shifting dynamics in Ghana’s parliament.
