Following Sudan’s successful qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), coach Kwasi Appiah has set his sights on an even greater goal: qualifying the war-torn nation for their first-ever FIFA World Cup.

Sudan currently leads a challenging qualifying group that includes Senegal and DR Congo. Appiah believes that cultivating the right mindset among his players is crucial for success.

“I tell [the players]: ‘How can you aim to go to the World Cup if you don’t put yourself at the level of Spain, England, or Brazil?'” he told BBC Africa.

Appiah also highlighted the unifying power of football, recalling the emotional response to Sudan’s 3-0 victory over South Sudan in Juba, where large sections of the crowd joined in singing the Sudanese national anthem.

With unwavering self-belief and resilience, Appiah is determined to lead Sudan to football’s biggest stage.
