John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized the government for mishandling an $11.5 billion loan facility obtained over the past eight years.

Mahama argued that had these funds been properly managed, they could have been used to fund transformative projects capable of advancing Ghana’s development to levels similar to cities like Dubai.

While addressing the Muslim community during a special prayer service at the Great Hall of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in the Ashanti Region, Mahama compared the current administration’s borrowing to his own tenure as president.

He pointed out that under his leadership, the government borrowed $3.5 billion, which funded major infrastructure projects such as the expansion of Tema Harbour, the construction of Terminal 3 at Kotoka International Airport, and several other initiatives aimed at boosting national growth.

“Under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the government borrowed $11.5 billion over five years. In comparison, despite overseeing significant development projects, my administration borrowed just $3.5 billion,” Mahama said.
