The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has called for the establishment of a committee to explore potential pension models for former Members of Parliament (MPs).
Ayariga’s proposal suggests that the pension scheme be financed by proceeds from carbon credits, aiming to provide financial support for former lawmakers who may face financial hardship after their time in office.
Presenting the idea in a formal statement to Parliament on January 29, Ayariga stressed the importance of ensuring that MPs, who have served their constituencies with dedication, are supported once they leave the House, either after choosing not to run again or losing their elections.
“This is a noble thing to serve your constituency in this House. Some MPs serve for as long as 24 years, yet they often leave without sufficient pension arrangements to ensure they can live with dignity,” Ayariga remarked, emphasizing the need for proper financial security for lawmakers once their political careers end.
