John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has raised significant concerns about the erosion of peace under the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) administration, particularly in light of a renewed chieftaincy conflict in Bawku.

The longstanding dispute has escalated following the return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile, resulting in at least two fatalities and multiple injuries.

During a campaign event in Saboba on Monday, October 28, Mahama urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and avoid any violent provocations.

He stressed the necessity of dialogue to resolve the ongoing conflict and committed to restoring lasting peace in Bawku if elected in the upcoming elections.

“Without peace, there can be no progress. Unfortunately, any time Ghana’s peace is threatened, it has been under the NPP government. I have been hearing alarming reports from Bawku that suggest a disturbance of peace is imminent,” he stated.

Mahama appealed to the residents of Bawku and all stakeholders to remain patient and avoid being drawn into violence. He highlighted the influence of external forces attempting to inflame ethnic tensions.

“I urge the people of Bawku to stay calm and restrained. Please do not allow yourselves to be provoked into conflict. The NDC is coming, and we will ensure that peace is restored in Bawku and its surrounding areas,” he added.

He also cautioned against those who are inconsistent in their words and actions, stating, “The most dangerous person is someone who says one thing today and another tomorrow—someone you cannot trust.”
