President-elect John Dramani Mahama has expressed a strong commitment to improving the future for Ghana’s youth following his victory in the December 7 general elections.
Mahama acknowledged the enthusiasm and high expectations of young people during his campaign rallies, describing it as a humbling reminder of the significant work ahead to secure a better life for all Ghanaians.
Winning with 6,328,397 votes (56.55% of the valid ballots), Mahama defeated his closest rival, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 4,657,304 votes (41.61%).
In an interview with DW TV on Monday, December 16, Mahama reflected on the optimism displayed by young Ghanaians, expressing how deeply moved he was by their energy and hope for the future.
“Seeing the faces of young people at all the rallies, and feeling the high expectations they have for our government, gives me a humble sense of responsibility,” Mahama said. “It drives me to give my best so I can turn this country around and create a better future for our youth.”
He emphasized the need for a “reset” in Ghana, stating, “We need a reset to create a better environment where young people can thrive and have opportunities to fully realize their potential.”
Mahama also acknowledged the struggles many young Ghanaians face, with opportunities remaining scarce despite their talents and hard work. He vowed that his administration would focus on fostering an inclusive environment where every young person, regardless of background, could dream big and succeed.
