Former President John Dramani Mahama has assured the people of the Ashanti Region that the Sewua Hospital will be completed and made operational without delay.
Speaking during the first Akwasidae celebration of the year at the Manhyia Palace on Sunday, January 19, President Mahama outlined plans to address the hospital’s infrastructural and operational challenges.
He emphasized the importance of the 250-bed Sewua Hospital in easing the pressure on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), which serves as one of the largest healthcare facilities in the region. KATH currently faces significant strain, catering to patients from Ashanti and neighboring areas, and is in urgent need of upgrades.
“The Sewua Hospital is not operational because it lacks essential services like electricity, water, and proper road access,” Mahama said. “I assure you that these issues will be tackled immediately, allowing the hospital to open and help relieve the burden on Komfo Anokye.”
He further explained that the completion of Sewua Hospital would create an opportunity to carry out necessary renovations at KATH without disrupting its operations, thus improving healthcare services across the region.
Mahama highlighted the broader significance of the Sewua Hospital, noting that relocating patients to the new facility would create much-needed space at KATH, which is currently operating at full capacity.
“It is challenging to renovate Komfo Anokye when the hospital is at full capacity,” he remarked, stressing the urgency of addressing the issues at both hospitals to enhance healthcare delivery in the region.
Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had commissioned the Sewua Hospital before leaving office. However, the project’s contractor, Euroget De-Invest S.A., criticized the move, stating that the facility was not yet ready for use.
