The Majority in Parliament has pushed back against criticisms from the Minority Caucus over the recently approved GHS1 energy sector levy, accusing them of misleading the public and engaging in populist tactics.

The Minority has argued that the levy was introduced without adequate consultation, claiming the government sneaked it through Parliament without engaging stakeholders or allowing for sufficient debate.

However, Emmanuel Kwesi Bedzrah, Chairman of Parliament’s Energy Committee, refuted these claims, insisting that Minority members were fully present and involved during the committee’s deliberations on the amendment bill.

“All the Minority members on the Finance Committee and leaders of the Energy Committee were present during discussions. No one walked out. Everyone participated in reviewing the bill,” Bedzrah said.

He specifically named George Kwame Aboagye and Collins Adomako Mensah among those in attendance, asserting that the process was transparent and that the final decision reflected a majority vote.

“To later claim there was no consultation and organise a press conference to that effect is deliberate misinformation,” Bedzrah added.

The GHS1 levy has sparked widespread public debate, with concerns about its potential economic impact and the transparency of its passage through Parliament.
