At least two children have tragically lost their lives due to severe malnutrition in the Bawku Municipal area in 2024. The ongoing conflict in the region has significantly worsened the situation, leading to a surge in malnutrition cases.
The Bawku Municipal Health Nutrition Officer, Bathomio Asigri, revealed that the number of malnutrition cases has skyrocketed, with 65 cases reported in 2024 alone. In 2023, the region witnessed a staggering 297 cases.
The conflict has disrupted economic activities, making it difficult for families to access essential food supplies and maintain a balanced diet. As a result, many children are suffering from severe malnutrition, and pregnant women are facing anemia.
The Health Nutrition Officer emphasized the impact of the conflict on food security and dietary patterns. He noted that the reduced trading activities in the area have led to fewer meals being consumed per day, contributing to the rise in malnutrition cases.
To address this pressing issue, urgent measures are needed to provide adequate nutrition and healthcare services to the affected population.
