A 28-year-old man, Alhassan Sayibu, has been sentenced to five years in prison for defrauding a woman of GH₵5,000 and for sexual assault linked to a fake money-doubling scheme.
Sayibu, a motor fitter from Yendi in the Northern Region, was found guilty of defrauding Tabal-Tuo Vida, a hairdresser from Damongo in the Savannah Region.
The court learned that Sayibu posted a video on Facebook claiming he could double money, which caught Vida’s attention.
After reaching out to Sayibu, he persuaded her to send GH₵2,000 for “herbs” needed to initiate the money-doubling ritual. Sayibu then instructed Vida to travel to Yendi, where he introduced her to an accomplice posing as a “godfather” responsible for performing the ritual. They demanded additional money and allegedly coerced her into sexual relations as part of the process.
Afterward, Sayibu handed Vida a parcel, instructing her not to open it until he provided further instructions. Once back in Damongo, she opened the parcel only to find it filled with lotto papers.
Vida reported the incident to the police, leading to Sayibu’s arrest. In the Yendi Circuit Court, presided over by His Honour Ebenezer Kweku Ansah, Sayibu pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years of hard labor.
In a separate case at the same court, Alhassan Osman, a car conductor, received a one-year prison sentence for escaping police custody. He had been detained but escaped while on work duty and was later recaptured in Bimbilla.
