The Ghana Mine Workers Union has voiced its opposition to potential job terminations at the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), where management is reportedly planning to lay off approximately 50 employees.

This move follows a government directive to terminate appointments made after December 7, 2024. The union has engaged in discussions with PMMC management to address the situation.

Abdul Moomin Gbana, General Secretary of the Ghana Mine Workers Union, emphasized that the union will resist any actions that violate labor laws. “In respect of PMMC, there has been some contemplation of a kind. They have indicated to the union, what we have told them as a preliminary response is that look, the laws are available, ensure that whatever your intentions are, you do so in accordance with the law,” Gbana stated.

He further added, “Anything contrary to law, the Ghana Mine Workers Union will resist it. Even though these recruitments were done and the timing was clearly not the best, it is also not the reason why the current government should go down a similar route.”
