Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has raised concerns regarding the age and tenure of the newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
Speaking in Parliament on March 18, 2025, Afenyo-Markin pointed to an official statement that claimed IGP Yohuno has served in the Ghana Police Service for 40 years. However, with Yohuno reportedly being 60 years old, Afenyo-Markin questioned at what age he joined the force, suggesting the need for further scrutiny.
Christian Tetteh Yohuno, who replaced Dr. George Akuffo Dampare as IGP on March 13, 2025, has sparked discussions regarding his years of service and what this means for his future tenure.
Afenyo-Markin indicated that the Minority would be looking into the matter further to ensure transparency and compliance with public service regulations.
“The Minister in his statement introduced the new IGP, and I congratulate him on his appointment. However, in the Minister’s communication to the country, it was stated that the new IGP has spent forty years in the service,” Afenyo-Markin explained.
“Forty years as a police officer. So, at the right time, we will do the math to determine whether he started at age 20, 19, or 18—his age and all. That’s just by the way. I wish him well. I’m only trying to calculate whether the IGP will be retiring soon. But Mr. Speaker, that’s beside the point,” he added.
