The 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) draw has placed tournament hosts Morocco in a tough group for the upcoming competition.
The Atlas Lionesses will face Zambia, DR Congo, and Senegal in Group A. Zambia, captained by Barbra Banda, recently triumphed over Morocco in a two-legged qualifier to secure a spot at the Paris 2024 Olympics, making this matchup even more exciting.
Morocco, under the leadership of coach Jorge Vilda, who guided Spain to victory in the 2023 Women’s World Cup, will look to overcome the challenge posed by these formidable opponents.
Defending champions South Africa will face Ghana, Mali, and Tanzania in Group C, while Group B features Nigeria, the record 11-time WAFCON champions, along with Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana.
The top two teams from each group will progress to the quarter-finals, as well as the two best third-place finishers. The tournament will be held in Morocco from July 5-26, 2025.
Although the qualification for WAFCON was completed in December 2023, the finals were delayed due to a packed international football schedule, with teams like Nigeria and Zambia also preparing for the Paris Olympics.
