Accra, Ghana – Naa Momo Lartey, the President’s nominee for the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, has pledged to champion improved maternity leave policies in Ghana.
During her vetting by the Parliamentary Appointments Committee on Wednesday, January 22nd, Lartey emphasized the importance of extending the current three-month maternity leave period to support the well-being of both mothers and children.
“It is important for women to have a prolonged leave period, not only to take care of the children but also to properly heal,” Lartey stated. “As an employer, I will encourage you to consider offering extended leave periods, such as six months, if possible.”
Lartey also expressed support for extending parental leave benefits to fathers, promoting gender equity in caregiving responsibilities.
She highlighted the need for collaboration with key stakeholders, including civil society organizations (CSOs) and gender advocates, to achieve these policy goals.
“I will sit with all stakeholders, CSOs who are deep into it, and I will join the many advocates to look at what is best and ensure that we push it,” she declared.
Lartey’s commitment to advocating for improved maternity leave policies reflects a progressive approach to addressing the needs of working mothers and promoting gender equality in Ghana.
