George Sarpong, Executive Secretary of the National Media Commission, has expressed deep concern regarding the recent assault on Joy News reporter Erastus Asare Donkor and three of his colleagues by armed illegal miners in the Ashanti Region.
In a statement, Sarpong emphasized that while media practitioners in Ghana have faced numerous violent incidents, the attack on Erastus stands out as particularly troubling. “We must recognize the uniqueness of this attack and why it cannot be tolerated,” he said. “The assailants were organized criminals who targeted Erastus at a time when the nation is united against illegal mining, or galamsey.”
Sarpong noted that the attackers demonstrated a blatant disregard for authority, indicating their willingness to resort to violence to protect their interests. “Their message is clear: ‘We don’t fear anyone in Ghana and are prepared to act without consequence,'” he explained, highlighting that this threat extends beyond journalists. “It is not just journalists who are under attack; the entire society is at risk, with journalists serving as the initial targets.”
Sarpong spoke on Joy News’ AM Show on November 11, 2024, which focused on media freedom in the country. Erastus reported that during the assault, the attackers stole vital equipment, including SD cards, drones, and other essential devices.
As of now, the police have not taken significant action regarding the incident, despite the victims promptly reporting the attack.
