Despite competing on the pitch, supporters of Newcastle United and Aston Villa came together at Villa Park during the Premier League season opener to voice their frustration over the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

This collective discontent came just before Aston Villa confirmed the transfer of Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle—an academy graduate whose sale brought Villa a pure profit but left many feeling uneasy.

Aston Villa captain John McGinn, a vocal critic of the financial regulations, lamented that “this seems to be the way football is set up these days.”

Even former Villa manager Dean Smith, who gave Ramsey his debut, expressed sadness at the £40 million transfer, saying, “It is sad for the Villa fans to see one of our own go.”
