Newcastle United’s hopes of advancing to the UEFA Champions League round of 16 were dashed as they fell to a 2-1 defeat against AC Milan at St James’ Park.
Despite a strong start, which saw Joelinton score a spectacular goal, the Magpies tired as the game wore on and allowed Milan to mount a comeback. The visitors took advantage of Newcastle’s fatigue, scoring twice in the second half to secure their place in the UEFA Europa League.
Despite needing a victory to progress, Newcastle couldn’t overcome Milan’s resurgence. The Italian side’s first goal was scored by Christian Pulisic, who capitalized on a mistake by the Newcastle defence to tap in from close range.
The match then became a back-and-forth affair, with both teams creating chances and hitting the woodwork. Ultimately, it was Milan’s substitute Samuel Chukwueze who sealed the win for his team with a goal six minutes from full time.
Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain’s draw against Dortmund meant that they finished second in Group F and advanced to the knockout stages. Milan’s victory ensured that they would join them in the UEFA Europa League, while Newcastle were left disappointed and eliminated from European competition.
Looking ahead, Newcastle will next face Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday, while Milan take on Monza in Serie A on Sunday.
