Felix Gyamfi, the Director-General of the National Service Authority (NSA), has announced that prospective national service participants without a valid Ghana Card will not be eligible for registration.

This new requirement is part of a broader initiative to eliminate ghost names from the NSA’s payroll. In a press conference on Thursday, February 13, 2025, Mr. Gyamfi explained, “If you do not have a valid Ghana Card ID, you will not be allowed into our system. If you are a prospective graduate and you do not have a valid Ghana Card to register, you will not be allowed to do national service. This is one of the measures to remove ghost names.”

He criticized the previous management for failing to implement the necessary checks and policies that could have prevented ghost names from appearing on the NSA payroll. “This was a leadership problem,” he stated, noting that the safeguards meant to protect taxpayers’ money were not properly enforced.

A recent headcount of active National Service personnel, conducted by the Finance Minister as a step towards clearing outstanding allowance arrears from August 2024, revealed over 81,885 suspected ghost names on the NSA payroll.
