The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has attributed its unexpected defeat in the December 2024 general elections to what it describes as a spiritual influence, citing unusual occurrences that seemed to point to a non-material cause.
In an interview, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua expressed his belief that a spiritual factor played a role in the party’s poor performance.
He pointed to a low voter turnout among NPP supporters across the country, suggesting that the outcome could not be explained solely by traditional political reasons.
“It was as though our members decided not to vote,” Kodua remarked. “In all sixteen regions, it felt like NPP supporters had collectively decided not to cast their votes. This is highly unusual and cannot be attributed to regular political factors.”
Kodua also discussed how some pastors, who have traditionally supported the NPP with spiritual intercession, had withdrawn their backing due to internal tensions and anger. He explained that the lack of spiritual support from these influential figures had a significant impact on the election’s results.
“I appeal to the pastors who intercede for us,” Kodua said. “A lot of spiritual activities took place ahead of the 2024 elections. Some pastors and women of prayer, who should have been supporting us, withheld their support due to anger, and that definitely influenced the outcome.”
This spiritual explanation for the NPP’s defeat echoes a prophecy by Rev. Owusu Bempah, a well-known religious leader and past NPP supporter, who had predicted a major defeat for the party.
His prophecy suggested that spiritual forces would contribute to the party’s loss.
The final results, confirmed by the Electoral Commission on December 9, 2024, saw NDC candidate John Mahama win with 6,328,397 votes (56.55%) over Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP, who garnered 4,657,304 votes (41.61%). The NDC also dominated the parliamentary elections, securing 183 seats while the NPP took only 88.
