The Deputy Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Majeed Bawa, has attributed the recent vandalism of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium to betting addiction among young fans.
Following Ghana’s defeat to Angola in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, angry supporters invaded the pitch and destroyed pitch panels.
While some blamed a combination of the result and the poor pitch condition, Bawa believes that betting addiction is the primary culprit.
He witnessed the vandalism firsthand and described the aggressive behavior of the fans.
Bawa expressed his belief that the young people involved in the vandalism were motivated by their losses in betting.
He emphasized that their actions were not solely due to Ghana’s defeat but also driven by frustration over financial losses.
The poor condition of the pitch has been a subject of much discussion, with many calling for Ghana to be banned from hosting home games until the pitches are repaired.
