The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Joana Deladem Yabani, a fourth-year student at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), and is calling for swift justice.
In a press statement issued on February 27, 2025, NUGS extended its condolences to Yabani’s family, friends, and the KNUST community, stating, “No student should have to lose their life under such circumstances, and we stand in solidarity with all those affected by this tragedy.”
NUGS commended KNUST management for initiating an investigation and urged for transparency and promptness in uncovering the truth.

The union echoed the KNUST Students’ Representative Council (SRC) demand for access to CCTV footage and a thorough investigation. “The pursuit of justice for Joana must be uncompromising and impartial, ensuring that those responsible, if any, are held accountable,” NUGS emphasized.
The incident has underscored the need for improved campus security nationwide.
NUGS called on the government, university authorities, and stakeholders to prioritize student safety through enhanced surveillance, increased security patrols, and improved emergency response protocols.
Addressing KNUST students and the broader Ghanaian student body, NUGS acknowledged the grief and fear caused by the tragedy. “Let us remain united, support one another, and demand the justice and security that every student deserves,” the statement read. NUGS encouraged anyone with information to assist authorities.
NUGS pledged to closely monitor the investigation and vowed, “We will not relent until justice is served.”
