A confrontation between police and supporters of a candidate in the Council of State election re-run in the Ashanti Region led to the arrest of one individual.

The suspect, believed to be a supporter of former NDC Chairman in the region, Yaw Obimpeh, was among those who ignored police orders to stay behind barricades set up at the election venue.

Today’s election serves as a re-run of last week’s vote, which was abruptly halted due to an attack by a group of thugs who targeted Electoral Commission (EC) officials, destroying several materials, including ballot papers.

In response to the violence, security measures for the election re-run have been intensified. Vehicle access to the venue is now restricted, and six police-manned barricades have been placed along streets leading to the Prempeh Assembly Hall.

The streets are also closed to traffic.

Hundreds of police personnel, along with crowd control equipment, have been deployed to the venue to maintain order.
