A fatal collision on the Cape Coast–Takoradi highway has resulted in one fatality and the rescue of nine other individuals.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, near the Elmina checkpoint, involving a Toyota Hiace (GR 1464-18) and a Zonda truck (GN 4197-21).
Firefighters from the University of Cape Coast Station, led by ACFO II Merinder Mary Attiga-Mensah, responded swiftly to a distress call received at 3:25 p.m. Upon arrival, they secured the accident site, managed traffic flow, and coordinated with the Regional Headquarters Rescue Team.
Nine trapped passengers were safely extracted from the wreckage and transferred to the National Ambulance Service for urgent medical attention at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Hospital.
While the driver of the Toyota Hiace sustained only minor injuries, one passenger was found unresponsive and was immediately transported to Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, where they later passed away.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the crash was caused by wrongful overtaking on the part of the Toyota Hiace driver. The Toyota vehicle sustained severe damage, while the Zonda truck incurred partial damage.
