The Minority in Parliament has clarified that the approved budget for the Accra-Tema Motorway expansion project is $339 million, not $660 million.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo recently cut the sod for the project, announcing plans to transform the motorway into a modern 10-lane highway.
However, the Minority’s spokesperson on infrastructure, Governs Agbodza, has raised concerns about the project’s transparency and funding.
Agbodza stated that Parliament only approved $339 million in multi-year funding for the project, and not $660 million as claimed.
He emphasized that no one has the right to commit the country to future spending on the project without Parliament’s approval.
The expansion project aims to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance safety on the 27.7-kilometer motorway.
The project will be executed in three phases, focusing on rehabilitation, upgrading, and improvements to the motorway and surrounding roads.
Agbodza expressed concerns about the project’s funding source, stating that the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) is not sustainable.
He also highlighted the government’s outstanding debts to road contractors and questioned the timing of the project’s commencement.
Agbodza concluded that the project’s launch is mere propaganda for votes, and Ghanaians will not fall for it.
