Political parties and their presidential candidates contesting the upcoming December 7 elections have signed a peace pact to ensure a peaceful electoral process. The pact commits all parties to maintaining peace before, during, and after the polls.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has urged all political parties to respect and accept the results of the election, with Chairperson Jean Mensa assuring the public that strong measures are in place to guarantee the elections will be peaceful, free, fair, and transparent.
At the signing ceremony of the 4th Presidential Election Peace Pact in Accra on Thursday, November 28, Jean Mensa called for confidence in the electoral process, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a peaceful and stable environment throughout the elections.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), passionately appealed to political parties, the media, and security agencies to work together to preserve peace during and after the elections.
He highlighted Ghana’s history of successfully navigating democratic processes during elections and urged all stakeholders to ensure peace prevails.
On the other hand, John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), raised concerns about the lack of action against those who incite violence, warning that this undermines the credibility of the peace pact.
He emphasized that peace pacts must be followed by swift and decisive actions, or they risk losing their effectiveness.
