Bright Aweh, the prime suspect in the murder of Ghana Immigration Service officer Stephen King Amoah, has been remanded into police custody for two weeks by the Adabraka District Court. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 22, 2025, as investigations continue.
Aweh is believed to have been the last person to communicate with Amoah before the officer was reported missing on July 3. Amoah, 38, had left his home in Ashongman Estate to meet a friend. Five days later, on July 9, his charred body was discovered at Abuom Junction, near Kwabenya.
The case, initially handled as a missing person investigation, was reclassified as murder following the discovery of the body and transferred to the Adabraka District Court due to its broader jurisdiction.
Family Calls for Justice
Speaking to reporters, the deceased’s sister, Vesta Amoah, called for a swift and just resolution to the case.
“All we’re asking is for justice to prevail. He was our lastborn. My mother is broken—we can’t eat or sleep. We’re in pain. Too often these cases are dismissed. We hope this time justice is served,” she said.
Timeline of Events and Investigation
At a press briefing on August 4, 2025, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, provided details surrounding the case.
According to the CID, Amoah was last seen on July 3 after reportedly receiving photographs of cash from the suspect, who had promised to repay a debt. When Amoah failed to return home and could not be reached, a missing person report was filed the following day.
Police arrested Bright Aweh on July 6. During interrogation, Aweh admitted to meeting Amoah and handing him GH¢500,000—claiming GH¢200,000 was for debt repayment, with the remainder to be held by the officer. However, inconsistencies in his statements and the unexplained source of the money raised red flags.
On July 9, the body of Stephen King Amoah was discovered, severely burned, in a gutter near the GBC Satellite area opposite Comet Estate. His identity was later confirmed by family members.
Forensic Evidence Mounts
A search of Aweh’s residence uncovered disturbing findings. Investigators discovered blood stains in the living room, freshly sprayed walls, an empty spray paint can, and signs of a rushed cleanup.
A secondary crime scene nearby revealed a burnt woollen carpet, blood-stained camouflage fabric, and a blood-soaked fufu pestle hidden in a bush roughly 100 meters from the suspect’s home.
Authorities also impounded Aweh’s vehicle, which tested positive for blood traces. All physical evidence has been submitted for forensic analysis. DNA samples from Amoah’s mother and son are being used to assist in confirming the victim’s identity through profiling.
Charges Filed
The suspect, Bright Aweh, has been officially charged with murder. He remains in custody pending further investigations and court proceedings.
