Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, former Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology, has sounded the alarm about the devastating effects of illegal small-scale mining, known as galamsey, on Ghana’s agriculture.
He warned that the ongoing destruction of arable land caused by these mining activities could lead to a severe food crisis in the country.
“The hunger we are heading towards is beyond imagination. Illegal miners are destroying our land, pipelines, and biodiversity, yet no one seems to care,” he stated in an interview.
Prof. Frimpong-Boateng also expressed concern about the lack of leadership that truly prioritizes the welfare of future generations.
He noted the growing disillusionment among the youth, criticizing current leaders for their failure to address critical national issues.
“We lack leaders who are willing to make sacrifices for the future. The youth of today have lost hope,” he said. “We’re not serious about fighting corruption. Leadership in this country isn’t about satisfying your own family while leaving future generations to suffer.”
