The Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) has issued a stern warning to electricity consumers in Tamale, Northern Region, about the dangers of purchasing counterfeit electricity meters.
Following reports of an increase in fake meters being sold in local markets, the PURC and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) have raised concerns about the significant risks posed by these unauthorized devices.
Ali Simon Jarana, Northern Regional Manager of PURC, explained that these fake meters have not undergone necessary testing and calibration by NEDCo, making them non-compliant with standards set by the Energy Commission and Ghana Standards Authority.
Using counterfeit meters can lead to inaccurate billing and potentially dangerous electrical hazards.
To protect themselves, consumers are urged to be vigilant when acquiring electricity meters. Only certified meters should be used to ensure safety and compliance with regulatory standards.
PURC plans to launch public awareness campaigns to educate consumers on the importance of using verified equipment for their energy needs. Consumers are also advised to report any suspicious activities or offers related to electricity meters to the relevant authorities.
