Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to become a Real Madrid player on Sunday, June 1, after Liverpool accepted a fee to release the defender early from his contract.

Sources at Liverpool indicate the fee is 10 million euros (£8.4 million), paid by Real as a single, up-front sum. However, sources at the Spanish club suggest a lower amount was paid. This agreement allows the England right-back to join Real in time to participate in the Club World Cup.

The 26-year-old would have been available on a free transfer when his contract with Liverpool expired on June 30. Alexander-Arnold, who had already confirmed his departure from Liverpool this summer, has agreed to a six-year deal with Real Madrid, which includes a 1 billion euro (£840 million) buy-out clause.

FIFA approved an additional transfer window for this summer, from June 1-10, enabling teams to register new players for the expanded month-long Club World Cup. The tournament begins on June 14 and will be held in the United States.

Real Madrid’s opening group game in the Club World Cup is against Saudi side Al-Hilal on June 18 in Miami.

Before that, Alexander-Arnold could add to his 33 England caps, having been named in the squad for their World Cup qualifier against Andorra (June 7) and a friendly against Senegal (June 10).

Alexander-Arnold has been with Liverpool since joining his hometown club at the age of six. During his time with the Reds, he has won two Premier League titles, the Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, and League Cup.
