The Industrial Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Abass Imoro, has urged commuters to report any driver demanding unapproved fare increases to the nearest police station.

Imoro stressed that only the GPRTU and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have the authority to negotiate and announce changes to transport fares.

“Do not pay any new fare when drivers demand it, and report them to the nearest police station. We have laws in this country, and there is no law that allows any transport operator to set their own fares. If we allow this, it would mean we are cheating the public,” he stated.

His comments come in response to the Alliance of Drivers Ghana’s announcement of a 20% fare increase, citing rising fuel prices, engine oil costs, and the increasing prices of vehicle spare parts.

However, in a statement issued on March 18, road transport operators urged the public to ignore any fare hikes not officially announced by the GPRTU or GRTCC. The operators emphasized that only these two bodies are authorized to determine and publicize official transport fares in the country.
