Kumasi, Ghana – In a powerful display of unity, fans of Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak set aside their historic rivalry to honor the memory of Kotoko supporter, Nana Pooley, at a vigil held Sunday at Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
The vigil, a tribute to Pooley’s life and a call for justice following his tragic death, brought together players, technical staff, management, and fans from both clubs.
Kotoko head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum led the team delegation, joined by management and players. Former Black Stars coach James Kwasi Appiah also attended to pay his respects. Pooley was fatally stabbed near Nana Koromansah II Park after Kotoko’s match against Nsoatreman FC, sparking widespread calls for justice and increased security at match venues.
The presence of Hearts of Oak fans, alongside Kotoko supporters, highlighted the shared grief and passion that unites the Ghanaian football community. Fans from both sides lit candles and sang songs in remembrance of Pooley. Kotoko’s university supporters’ wing, Porcupine Tertiary, led jama songs, with Hearts of Oak fans joining in enthusiastically.
The atmosphere was a mix of sorrow and unity, as attendees remembered Pooley’s infectious spirit and love for football.
His dedication to Kotoko was evident even on his wedding day, just seven months before his death, when he led a jama session.
His wife, Yaa Gifty, and guests recalled this moment, highlighting his unwavering joy for the game. The vigil served as a poignant reminder of the loss felt throughout Ghanaian football, as fans continue to demand justice and remember Pooley’s vibrant presence.
