Sam George, the lead sponsor of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, has expressed frustration over the Supreme Court’s delay in hearing two cases related to the bill.
He argues that these cases, which could have significant implications for both the legislature and the executive, should be prioritized for a swift resolution. “There is no more important matter before the Supreme Court than one that affects both the legislature and executive,” he said in an interview on Joy FM.
The Supreme Court has declined to rule on applications seeking to block Parliament from transmitting the bill to the President, promising instead to expedite the hearing of the substantive cases.
However, the cases of Amanda Odoi and Richard Dela Sky have been pending since July, with no hearings yet scheduled.
Mr. George emphasized the urgency of the matter, citing a previous Supreme Court judgment by Justice Yonny Kulendi that addressed similar issues. He urged the Chief Justice to convene a panel to hear the cases promptly.
He also announced the postponement of a planned demonstration against the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo, from September 17 to October 8, due to a conflicting political event.
The Judicial Service of Ghana has denied allegations that the Chief Justice is intentionally delaying the cases.
