London, England – Chelsea football star Sam Kerr has been found not guilty of racially aggravated harassment. A jury at Kingston Crown Court cleared Kerr in relation to an incident that occurred in Twickenham, southwest London, on January 30, 2023. Kerr, 31, was accused of calling a Metropolitan Police officer “stupid and white.”
Kerr’s defense was that she was “antagonised” by officers after being taken to a police station by a taxi driver following a dispute. While Kerr acknowledged using the words “stupid and white,” she denied that they constituted a racial offense.
Following the verdict, Kerr gave a thumbs-up to her legal team before leaving the courtroom with her fiancée, Kristie Mewis. The incident stemmed from a dispute with a taxi driver who took Kerr and Mewis to Twickenham Police Station after they allegedly refused to pay a cleaning fee when one of them was sick in the car, and also for allegedly smashing the vehicle’s rear window.
Judge Peter Lodder KC commented that Kerr’s own behavior contributed significantly to the allegation. He added, “I don’t go behind the jury’s verdict but that has a significant bearing on the question of costs.”
