San Diego FC joined Major League Soccer for the 2025-2026 season

Major League Soccer’s San Diego FC has condemned the “unacceptable” homophobic chanting that occurred during their inaugural home game and pledged to take immediate action to prevent future occurrences.

During Saturday’s goalless draw against St. Louis City, held at Snapdragon Stadium in front of over 34,000 fans, a one-word homophobic chant was repeatedly heard throughout the match.

The club responded during the game with messages urging fans to cease the “offensive chanting,” and subsequently released a statement affirming their commitment to inclusivity. “What took place during our first-ever home match does not reflect who we are as a club or the values we stand for,” the statement read. “The use of homophobic language in our stadium is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”

San Diego FC emphasized that their club is founded on respect and the belief that soccer is for everyone. They have committed to taking “immediate steps to address this behaviour” and will implement a “detailed plan” before their next home game.

The specific chant in question, prevalent in the Mexican league, has led to multiple fines for Mexico’s national team by FIFA. It is typically used when the opposing goalkeeper takes a goal kick.

“The chant that was heard tonight is unacceptable,” stated San Diego FC head coach Mikey Varas. “It’s outside of our value system. It doesn’t represent the players, myself or the club, and it certainly doesn’t represent San Diego or Baja California. It’s not a reflection of who we are.”
