Tragedy struck at the aging Sekondi Market on Monday, October 6, when a section of the deteriorating structure collapsed, leading to the death of a trader who suffered severe injuries.

In the aftermath, traders and the Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Blay Nyamekye Armah, are renewing calls on the government to fulfill its longstanding promise to rebuild the market into a modern trading center.

Speaking emotionally at the scene, Mr. Armah appealed directly to President John Dramani Mahama and Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson to prioritize the market’s redevelopment to prevent further loss of life.

“President Mahama, Hon. Ato Forson, we are pleading with you to have mercy on our market women—our mothers—who have endured 32 years of hardship. People are dying, crying, and getting injured. Sekondi is crying out. Please show compassion and help us rebuild our market,” he pleaded.

Mr. Armah also called on running mate Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang to use her influence to advocate for the project, adding, “We know you are a mother. We believe you can speak to the President on our behalf.”

Traders shared their frustration and fear, emphasizing the unsafe conditions under which they work and the growing economic pressure.

“We’re pleading with the government to act now. We’re in debt and can’t make a living under these conditions. We need the market redeveloped immediately for our safety and survival,” one trader said.

The Sekondi Market has long been earmarked for redevelopment, but years of delays have left traders vulnerable. Monday’s incident has heightened the urgency, as both traders and local leaders demand swift and decisive government action.
