A 19-year-old second-year Senior High School (SHS) student, Elisha Akanlawen, has tragically drowned in the Amponsah Dam at Bibiani Zongo in the Western North Region.
The incident occurred while Elisha was swimming with friends. Lacking swimming skills, he struggled in the deep water and was quickly overwhelmed. Despite rescue attempts, he could not be saved.
Police and community leaders arrived at the scene to perform traditional rituals and recover the body, which was then taken to the Bibiani Government Hospital.
The Assembly Member for the Zongo Electoral Area, Mohammed Abdallah, expressed deep concern over the incident, noting that similar tragedies have occurred at the dam in the past.
He reiterated his long-standing call for a protective fence to be erected around the dam to prevent future drownings, stating that previous appeals to authorities have been unsuccessful.
He is now urgently appealing for assistance to secure the safety of the dam and prevent further loss of life.
