Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif has expressed his disappointment with the National Sports Authority (NSA) for renting out the Baba Yara Stadium just weeks before Ghana’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
The stadium was rented out for a five-day religious program in July, leaving the pitch in poor condition. The Black Stars’ subsequent 1-0 defeat to Angola at the venue, coupled with CAF’s revocation of the stadium’s license to host international matches, has raised concerns about Ghana’s ability to host future home games domestically.
Ussif criticized the NSA for its decision to rent out the stadium, stating that it had failed in its duty. Renting out national stadiums has become the NSA’s primary source of income, but the practice has proven counterproductive, as the facilities are often left in a deplorable state.
In response, the Sports Ministry has directed the NSA to take steps to address the issues with the pitch at the Baba Yara Stadium.
