Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President and the 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on party members and supporters to remain calm, resolute, and law-abiding in the face of what he describes as increasing political intimidation.
His call follows an attempted arrest of Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, the Member of Parliament for Assin South and Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee, by individuals believed to be operatives from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
Dr. Bawumia visited the MP after the incident and noted that Reverend Fordjour was “in high spirit and undaunted” despite the raid on his home.
In a message directed to the NPP’s grassroots, Dr. Bawumia stated:
“I charge all Party faithful to remain calm, steadfast, and law-abiding in this period of unfortunate political persecution.”
He reaffirmed the NPP’s commitment to the rule of law and democratic principles, even in times of political pressure.
Dr. Bawumia also renewed his appeal to President John Dramani Mahama to ensure that state security agencies are not weaponised for political purposes.
“The security institutions of our country must not be reduced to political tools used to harass and intimidate opponents,” he said, adding that such actions will not be tolerated by the Ghanaian people.
He described the conduct of the security operatives as a “descent into lawlessness and fear,” and stressed the importance of professionalism and accountability within Ghana’s security services.
Dr. Bawumia concluded by assuring NPP supporters that the party would continue to stand firm against abuse of power and remain committed to the values of democracy and justice.
