Hamza Suhuyini, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communication Team, has called for robust institutional backing for Attorney General Dominic Ayine to ensure the successful prosecution of individuals accused of financial misconduct, especially from the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

Suhuyini emphasized that the extent of corruption under the former government was too serious to ignore and demanded a strong, consistent pursuit of justice.

“No one can downplay the level of corruption and mismanagement this country endured over the past eight years,” Suhuyini stated. “We cannot take that for granted. That’s why we must empower the Attorney General to hold those responsible accountable.”

He argued that establishing a clear precedent for accountability would not only deliver justice but also act as a deterrent to future wrongdoing—even among current appointees under the Mahama administration.

“Even those currently serving in this government must understand that if they falter and a new government takes over, they too will be held accountable. We must set that standard,” he added.

Suhuyini’s remarks follow the recent prosecution of Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, who has been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime—specifically, willfully causing financial loss to the state. The charges stem from a $2 million payment made in 2019 to Africa Investor Holdings Limited for the proposed Sky Train project in Accra, which was never executed.

The charges, filed under Section 23(1) and Section 179a(3)(a) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), have reignited calls for deeper scrutiny of financial decisions made under the previous administration.

Suhuyini stressed that accountability should not be viewed through a partisan lens, but as a national duty grounded in constitutional principles.

“Justice must not be selective. It’s about protecting public trust and ensuring that no official—past or present—is above the law,” he concluded.
