Bekwai, Ghana – A 36-year-old teacher, John Ankomah Boateng, has been sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment with hard labor by the Bekwai Circuit Court for stealing from the Bosomefreho Rural Bank Limited in the Ashanti Region.
Boateng pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing and was convicted on his own plea.
According to the prosecution, led by Detective Chief Inspector Eric Twum, Boateng, a teacher at Freso SDA Junior High School, fraudulently withdrew a total of GH¢238,550.99 from his bank account, despite having a balance of only GH¢2.23. These withdrawals occurred between February 9th and 26th, 2024, using the Ghana Pay application.
The case was reported to the Regional CID Ashanti South on February 28, 2024, and Boateng was arrested on March 13, 2024.
In his caution statement, Boateng admitted to the crime, stating that he transferred GH¢10,000.00, GH¢5,000.00, GH¢20,000.00, and GH¢5,000.00 to individuals named Isaac Kwaku Duah and Neymar, respectively, for safekeeping. He also admitted to transferring GH¢40,000.00 to a travel agent to process travel documents for him.
