Three individuals have picked up nomination forms to contest the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in Akwatia ahead of the upcoming by-election.
The aspirants include former Member of Parliament Henry Boakye, current NDC Akwatia Constituency Secretary Bernard Bediako Baidoo, and Erasmus Koney Ali.
According to the party’s timetable, all aspirants who submit nominations by the deadline on Wednesday, July 30, will undergo vetting on Thursday, July 31. Balloting will follow immediately after the vetting. The primaries are scheduled for Monday, August 4, 2025.
The by-election in Akwatia was triggered by the recent passing of the sitting MP, prompting both major political parties to prepare for a tight race.
On the other side of the political divide, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has reportedly settled on Solomon Kwame Asumadu, CEO of Owuo Mining Company, as its candidate. The decision came after extensive consultations among party stakeholders, who agreed to adopt a consensus approach instead of holding a primary.
Speculation that the late MP’s widow, Mrs. Mavis Kumi, might be selected to contest the seat was dismissed by Eastern Regional NPP Chairman Jeff Konadu, who described such reports as “false and misleading.”
