Three people, including a young child, have died in the Adentan Municipality following heavy rainfall that caused widespread flooding across several parts of Accra on Sunday, May 18, 2025. The fatalities were confirmed by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Adentan, Ella Esiman Nongo.

In an interview on Monday, May 19, Madam Nongo detailed the tragic incidents, stating that the deaths occurred in separate locations. “Two lives were lost in Lakeside, including a four-year-old girl from Nanakrom, and another man perished near New Legon,” she said.

The flooding was the result of nearly three hours of uninterrupted rainfall, which began around 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. The downpour submerged several communities, including Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Adenta-Dodowa, and Tema. Major roads were rendered impassable, vehicles were stranded, and the Odaw drain—one of the city’s key stormwater systems—was overwhelmed and overflowed.

Emergency teams were deployed and successfully rescued several trapped residents in the Ashiyie area. However, Madam Nongo warned that low-lying and flood-prone communities remain at serious risk. She pointed to unchecked construction in waterways and the lack of proper drainage systems as major contributors to the disaster.

“This is a wake-up call. We need stricter enforcement of building regulations and urgent measures to tackle the root causes of flooding—not just in Adentan, but across the Greater Accra Region,” she stressed.

As recovery efforts continue, authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and avoid flood-prone zones during heavy rainfall.
