Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been charged by the Football Association (FA) for using a racial slur about his teammate, Son Heung-min.
In a June interview on Uruguayan TV, Bentancur was asked for a Tottenham shirt. He responded by saying, “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same.”
Bentancur later apologized for his comments on Instagram, stating that they were a “very bad joke.”
The FA has now charged Bentancur with an alleged breach of FA Rule E3 for misconduct related to the media interview.
They allege that the 27-year-old Uruguay international acted in an improper manner and used abusive or insulting words.
The FA has classified this as an aggravated breach due to the reference to nationality, race, or ethnic origin.
According to FA laws, match-based sanctions of 6-12 games are recommended for such acts of discrimination.
Bentancur has until Thursday, September 19, to respond to the charge.
