A devastating boat accident in Zamfara State, northwest Nigeria, has claimed the lives of at least 64 people, according to local officials.
The incident occurred early Saturday morning when a wooden vessel carrying 70 farmers to their fields near Gummi town capsized.
Rescue teams responded promptly, but despite their efforts, only six survivors were pulled from the water after hours of searching.
A local administrator, Aminu Nuhu Falale, who led the rescue operation, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and noted that this was the second such incident in the area.
The river crossing is a vital lifeline for over 900 farmers who rely on it to access their lands daily. However, with only two boats available, overcrowding has become a significant safety concern.
A local traditional ruler emphasized the need for more and safer boats to prevent future accidents.
Zamfara State is already facing multiple crises, including criminal activity and severe flooding.
Recent heavy rains have displaced thousands of residents, adding to the region’s challenges and making the boat accident even more tragic.
