UEFA has opened an investigation after Manchester City striker Khadija Shaw was struck by an object during the Women’s Champions League clash with Hammarby.
Shaw scored both goals for City in their 2-1 victory at Stockholm Arena on Thursday, which secured their spot in the quarter-finals with two group games still to play.
After scoring her first goal, Shaw celebrated enthusiastically in front of the home crowd, leading to a yellow card, and video replays showed an object being thrown at her from the stands.
In a statement, UEFA confirmed, “Proceedings have been opened against Hammarby IF for throwing objects (Article 16(2)(b) of the Disciplinary Regulations).” They also noted that Shaw received a yellow card for unsporting conduct following her goal celebration.
Following the match, City captain Alex Greenwood expressed her disappointment with match broadcaster DAZN for not mentioning the incident in their social media coverage. DAZN’s post implied that Shaw had “antagonised” the home fans, who responded with hostility.
Greenwood replied, clarifying, “Correction. Travel to Stockholm, score a big goal. Celebrates her goal. Gets objects thrown at her.”
Manchester City has chosen not to comment further, and Hammarby has also been approached for their perspective on the situation.
