The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) is set to undergo a name change to honour the legacy of the late President Professor John Evans Atta Mills, who played a pivotal role in the university’s founding.
The announcement was made by Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu during the inauguration of the university’s fourth substantive Governing Council on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, in Accra.
“This renaming is a posthumous tribute to a distinguished statesman, former President, and revered academic,” Minister Iddrisu stated.
He confirmed that the university will henceforth be known as the John Evans Atta Mills University of Health and Allied Sciences, acknowledging the late President’s instrumental contribution to its establishment.
The Minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing higher education infrastructure, pledging that ongoing projects—such as the laboratory complex on the Ho and Hohoe campuses—will be completed with funding from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).
Additionally, he noted that the Minister for Roads and Highways has committed to upgrading the university’s internal road network as part of a broader initiative to improve public university facilities across the country.
The newly inaugurated 17-member Governing Council is chaired by Professor Kodzo Gavua, who vowed to uphold and advance UHAS’s mission as a leading health sciences institution in Ghana and the sub-region.
“We will prioritize accommodation for students and staff, and work collaboratively to overcome challenges,” Professor Gavua assured.
Among the council members are prominent figures in academia and professional sectors, including Vice Chancellor Professor Lydia Aziato, Emeritus Professor Fred Newton Binka, and representatives from the university’s key stakeholder groups.
This renaming and leadership renewal mark a significant milestone in the growth of UHAS, Ghana’s only public university exclusively dedicated to health sciences education and research, as it continues to build a legacy of excellence in healthcare training and innovation.
