The Minority in Parliament is calling for the Finance and Education Ministers to be summoned to address the significant debt of over 100 million Ghana Cedis owed to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
According to the Minority, this outstanding debt is causing major operational disruptions, including delays in the maintenance of WAEC’s equipment and payments to examiners. These issues have led to setbacks in the release of the 2024 WASSCE results.
During a parliamentary session, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, the Ranking Member of the Education Committee, expressed his concern over the negative impact this debt is having on education in Ghana. He revealed that, due to the outstanding payments, examiners have threatened to withhold their scripts, which could delay the results release further.
“Information available indicates that the scheduled release date of 19 December for the 2024 results may now be delayed,” he stated. “I urge you, Mr. Speaker, to invite the Ministers for Education and Finance to come before the house and explain why the government has not released funds to ensure the timely release of the results. Our children must not be deprived of the chance to enter tertiary institutions in January 2025.”
