The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has responded to the National Union of Ghana Students’ (NUGS) planned protest by asserting that it has acted justly and within its mandate.

NUGS is set to demonstrate on February 25, 2025, to protest WAEC’s decision to withhold certain 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.

WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, acknowledged NUGS’s right to protest but maintained that the council’s decisions are made through established procedures.

“NUGS has the constitutional right to demonstrate against whatever they feel,” Kapi stated. “But in our press conference, we indicated clearly that no single staff of the council unilaterally decides to withhold results or to cancel results.”

He emphasized that decisions are made by appropriate committees within WAEC, ensuring fairness. “And so I would say that we have not arbitrarily been unjust to anybody as far as our operations are concerned,” Kapi concluded.
