The Techiman Traditional Council has issued a statement addressing the recent allegations surrounding an incident involving the convoy of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, during his visit to the Bono East Region.
In a statement released on December 3, 2024, the Council emphasized the strong familial and historical ties between the people of Techiman and the Ashantis. They reaffirmed that there is no animosity between the two groups, highlighting the shared history and mutual respect between the Asantehene and the Techimanhene, both of whom belong to the Oyoko Clan.
The statement followed reports that, on December 2, 2024, some unidentified youths threw stones at the vehicles in the Asantehene’s convoy as it returned to Kumasi after a funeral in Nkoranza. Preliminary police reports confirmed that stones were thrown at buses in the convoy.
The Council strongly refuted claims of any hostility between the Ashantis and the people of Techiman and denied allegations that Otumfuo’s security had fired gunshots or mistreated civilians in the area. They suggested that these accusations, possibly fueled by misinformation, may have contributed to the incident. The Council also condemned the role of unverified reports on social media in escalating tensions.
“Chieftaincy is a respected institution that must be honored at all times,” the statement read, urging the public to avoid misusing social media to insult traditional leaders or spread false information.
The situation was swiftly controlled by security personnel, and any injured individuals were promptly treated at the Holy Family Teaching Hospital.
Reaffirming their commitment to peace, the Techiman Traditional Council described Techiman as a cosmopolitan community that embraces people from all walks of life. They called for actions that promote unity and discourage any behavior that could harm the harmonious relationship between communities.
