Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has initiated a controlled spillage of excess water from the Weija Dam and is urgently advising residents in downstream communities to evacuate immediately to prevent potential disaster.

In a statement released on Friday, May 23, GWL announced that water levels at the dam have reached 45 feet, just two feet below its maximum operating capacity, due to the ongoing rainy season.

“To safeguard the structural integrity of the dam and avert any potential disaster, minimal spillage has begun,” the statement read. “The Management of GWL is by this release sounding a word of caution to inhabitants downstream to evacuate the area to forestall any eventuality.”

Communities identified as being at risk include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Adakope, and their surrounding vicinities.

GWL is appealing to residents in these vulnerable areas to relocate to higher ground without delay and to strictly follow safety instructions provided by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other relevant authorities.

The company also called upon the Ga West Municipal Assembly to desilt the estuary and clear refuse along the river course. This action is crucial to ensure the unimpeded flow of water into the sea and to minimize the risks of flooding.

“We kindly request that all affected residents remain cooperative and adhere to any safety instructions issued by the Municipal Assembly to ensure their safety and prevent any untoward incidents,” the statement concluded.

GWL emphasized that public cooperation is vital to avoid a recurrence of past flood disasters that have resulted from dam overflows.
